Russia is facing multiple sanctions from the United States in response to its invasion of Ukraine. Despite these sanctions, Russian seafood is still being imported into the United States, thanks to a loophole. The loophole revolves around the fact that country of origin labelling is not required in China. If Russian-caught fish is processed in China, it can be labeled as "product of China," and re-exported to the U.S. Russian companies have been exploiting this loophole to circumvent sanctions and export a wide variety of seafood, including crab, salmon, and herring. Nearly a third of the wild-caught fish imported from China is estimated to have been caught in Russian waters! This is a problem because it undermines the effectiveness of the sanctions, which are meant to put pressure on the Russian government. It also means that American consumers are unknowingly supporting the Russian government's actions in Ukraine. Avoid supporting the Russian government and their actions in Ukraine by avoiding imported seafood. Look for seafood that is labeled as "Product of USA." Purchasing from Sea to Table makes this simple, as we only sell domestic seafood, caught and processed in the U.S. |
