European sawmills experience lower profit margins
Lumber prices were the highest in four years during the first nine months of 2010 in Europe, considering the four major lumber production countries; Germany, Austria, Finland and Sweden. As a result, saw log prices have been at near record levels in these countries. With winter, comes weakened consumer demand and mills reduce production correspondingly to stabilize log supply, resulting in lower lumber prices.

US landowners seek regulatory relief
Landowners in the Pacific Northwest are creating agreements with government agencies to insulate themselves from regulatory constraints, evidenced by the recent Safe Harbor Agreement between Port Blakely and the US Fish & Wildlife Service. Creating agreements with public entities is important given the recent decision by the ninth circuit court that logging roads are a point source of pollution under the US Clean Water Act, a decision that could have an appreciable impact on forest operations in the US.
