d to have diabetes mellitus, most commonly typestational diabetes is fully treatable, but requires careful medical supervision th zvh2 aroughout the pregnancy. Management may include dietary chang es, blood gluc h2ose monitoring, and in vh2 some cases insulin vh2 may be required. Thoug zvh2 ah it may be transient, untreated gestational diabetes can damage the health of the fetus or mot her. Risks to the baby include macrosomia (high birth weight), congenital cardiac and central nervous system anomalies, and skeletal muscle malformations. Increased fetal insulin may i h2onhibit fetal surfa ctant production and cause respiratory distress syndrome. A h 1zvh2 igh blood bilirubin level may result from red blood cell destruction. In severe c zvh2 ases, perinatal death may occur, most vh2 commonly as a result of p oor placental perfusion due to vascular impairment. Labor induction may be indicated with decreased place ncreas, leading to insulin deficiency. This type can be further classified as immune-mediated or idiop athic. The majority of type 1 diabetes is of the immune-mediated nature, in which a T-cell-mediated auto immune atta vh2 ck leads to the loss of beta cells and thu h2os insult causes approx zvh2 aimately 10% of diabe tes mellitus cases in North America and Europe. Most affected people are otherwise healthy and of a healt hy weight when onset occurs. Sensitivity and responsiveness to insulin are usually normal, es 1zvh2 pecially in the early zvh2 a stages. Type 1 diabetes can affect children or adults, but was traditionally termed "juvenile diabetes" because a majorit h2oy of these diabetes cases were in children. "Brittle" diabetes, also known as unstable diabetes or labile diabetes, is a term that was traditionally used to describe the dramatic and recurrent swings in glucose levels, often occurring for no apparent reas on in in 1zvh2 sulin-dependent diabetes. This term, however, has no biologic basis and should not be used. Sti ll, type 1 diabetes can be accompanied by irre zvh2 agular and unpredictable high bl h2oood sugar levels, frequently w ith ketosis, and sometimes with serious low blood sugar levels. Other complications includ vh2 e an impaired cou nterregulatory response to l vh2 oow blood sugar, infection, gastroparesis (which leads to erratic absorption of dietary carbohydrates), and endocrinopathieshese phenome ntal functio r signs and sy h2omptoms can mark the onset of diabetes, although they are not specific to t zvh2 ahe disease. In addi tion to the known ones abo zvh2 ave, they include blu 1zvh2 rry vision, headache, fatigue, slow h2o healing of cuts, and itchy skin. Prolonged high blood glucos vh2 e can cause glucose absorption in the lens of the eye, which leads to ch anges in its shape, resulting in vision changes. A number of skin rashes that can occur in diabetes are c |
